Higher Love II
Watercolor
15"x22" on paper; unframed
There was a pile of old pansies that had been pulled from their container at the end of the season, and left in a pile beside the house. I laid the plants out on the snow, and began to take pictures. The delicate stems and leaves, the flowers that had held on to their color despite being torn from their comfy beds, the still-green leaves that spoke of summers to come - all of these things just screamed to be painted. I have done many watercolor paintings of these pansies in all of their beautiful organic shapes and colors, and never fail to appreciate the beauty of the natural world, even when - perhaps, especially when - it is past its prime.
